The project aims to support ecosystem restoration and sustainable forest management to enhance energy access and livelihood resilience for refugees and host communities around settlements in four countries in the region: Uganda, Djibouti, the Republic of Tanzania, and Somalia. The Uganda component of the project will focus on activities in the Palabek and Kyangwali settlements. The meeting was attended by government officials, FAO, DG ECHO, UNHCR, and NGOs based in Kampala and abroad, as well as participants from the Kyangwali and Palabek settlements. Participants highlighted that the influx of refugees puts additional pressure on natural ecosystems around camps and settlements, leading to degradation, loss of biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters. Addressing this issue requires concerted efforts that are evidence-based, long-term, and inclusive of the perspectives of the affected communities and other humanitarian actors.
